Synesthesia
WRITTEN BY NYREE LILY DELFIN
Imagine this; the radio turns on and you can see the music flowing through the air. Or maybe your purple walls taste like chocolate. What if letters, words, and numbers had taste/textures/colors. Although many people don't know about it, 1 out of 25 people have this condition. It is called synesthesia. Synesthesia is a condition caused by your senses being crossed. The word synesthesia means joined perception. It is caused by cross-wiring in the brain. People with this condition are called synesthetes. Each synesthete has different conditions. Some see sounds others taste words. They all are different because of their cross-wiring can be different. One person can relate color with words, and another synesthete can relate taste with color. Another type of synesthesia is mirror-touch synesthesia. This causes the synesthete to feel other’s emotions or physical touch. For example, if someone was pat on the back, they would also feel the pat. Mirror-touch synesthetes are also more empathetic than most people. Most synesthetes have a hard time learning languages because the words can be different colors. However, they are usually great at playing instruments, memorization, and remembering people's names. Most synesthetes are creative and really good at reading facial expressions. Overall, synesthesia is a condition that most people are uneducated about. There are many synesthetes that don't even know about the condition. Maybe you're a synesthete. Works Cited: faculty.washington.edu www.psychologytoday.com science.howstuffworks.com
